First Years! Meet THE Rachel Mangiavellano!

Hi (again) first years! Today's post is VERY important because I will be introducing you to your newest friend and greatest resource for career opportunities; Rachel Mangiavellano! I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Rachel about her involvement with first years and how she can help YOU! Let's check out what she had to say:

Tell us about yourself!

Hi everyone! My name is Rachel Mangiavellano and I am the first year career advisor in the College of Engineering. I have been at MSU for about 7 years. Prior to my role in The Center, I worked as an academic advisor. In my spare time, I love spending time with my husband and two boys and am a self proclaimed Disney fanatic!

What do you primarily work with first years on?

I work with first years on whatever they need! Everyone is at a different stage of their career journey when they come to MSU. I can help with career and major exploration, resume development, preparing for career fairs, finding internships and co-ops or starting to network.

If you could share one piece of advice to first years, what would it be?

Get started EARLY. We often hear students say they wish they had found The Center and started using the resources earlier during their time at MSU. Even if you don’t plan on seeking an internship this summer, we can still help you with preparation so that you are ready to jump in when the time comes!

What first steps do you recommend Freshman take when they are starting their career journey?

Talk to people in the field. Whether you know what you want to do or just think you know, talking to people that are out there working can be immensely helpful in starting to picture your future and learning about more options. If you don’t know any engineers, we can help connect you with lots of MSU Alumni who are eager to help fellow Spartans!

What is the best way for students to connect with you?

Students can schedule an appointment with me here or can email me quick questions at

Also, we have an awesome team of student workers called Career Peers who are available for walk-in help in C108 Wilson Hall or via Zoom. You can check out the hours here.

What situations should they connect with you about?

Students should connect with me about anything career related! As I said before, I can help you wherever you are in your career journey. Don’t be concerned that you need to be further along in classes or knowing what you want to do. Just come chat with me and we will plan out some steps to get started on your career journey and reach your goals!

There you heard it folks! Start your career search early with Rachel! She is here to help make the career journey less intimidating:) Happy Thanksgiving and as always, GO GREEN!
